Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo was a Californio general, statesman, and public figure. His military activites shaped the transition of Alta California from a territory of Mexico to the U. S. state of California.
The city of Vallejo, California was named for him, while the city of Benicia was named after his wife, Francisca Benicia Carrillo.
