Gortyn was originally a Greek city but became allied with the Romans in 68 BC and therefore avoided destruction like many other Greek cities when the Romans invaded Greece under the command of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Creticus. The city continued to become the capital of Crete until its destruction in 828 AD when the Arabs invaded Greece.
