Grave of Nancy Barnett

Lying in the middle of this road in Indiana is the grave of 39-year-old Nancy Barnett who died in 1831.

At the time of the burial, there would have been no road and Nancy was buried on top of a hill, which was known by her famliy as a favourite spot of hers.

Eventually other family members would join her side and a small cemetery was set up on the spot. However, in 1901, the city planners decided a road was needed to serve the nearby town of Amity and the road was planned to go right through the family cemetery.

Nancy's grandson, Daniel Doty, was angry and decided to camp at the grave armed with a shotgun and warned any workers that he would shoot them if they came near him, as he wanted his grandmother to rest in peace at that spot. Eventually the council agreed to leave Nancy's grave. The other family members buried at the site were moved and Nancy was left at the spot.

The road now splits into two lanes at the grave and joins back together at each side of the grave. In 1912 a historical marker was added to the grave site.

According to a local story: every time road workers had to work on the road near the grave, Daniel would sit with a shotgun and guard the grave.
