One of BBC's main radio transmitters on the Holme Moss moor. The base of the transmitter is 1,750 ft above sea level and the top of the mast is at 2,500ft (making the mast a height of 750ft). The mast weighs 140 tons. It carries the FM radio signals for the BBC's national radio stations, Radio Manchester (formerly GMR), Radio Sheffield, and Radio Leeds. It used to broadcast BBC television signals, before Emley Moor took over when the 625-line colour television UHF system began, being the first main transmitter in the north of England on 12 October 1951 on the old 405-line VHF system.
