Jim Thorpe was a highly decorated and versatile US athlete of Native American ancestry. Thorpe is considered one of the greatest athletes of the twentieth century as he walked on to Carlisle's track team in street clothes and broke the school highjump record. He was a college All-american in football, playing at running back, defensive back, placekicker and punter. He also played college baseball, lacrosse and won the 1912 intercollegiate ballroom dancing championship. He won two gold medals in the 1912 Summer Olympics only to have them stripped after it was found he was paid for two years of semi-professional baseball. After the olympics he played and excelled at professional baseball, basketball and football.
