His first major race win came as a co-driver in the 1989 24 Hours of Daytona. In 1991, he was victorious in a Champ Car race in Australia. His two career NASCAR Cup wins came at Daytona (summer 1997) and Martinsville (spring 1997). He has raced in 12 Indy 500's, with his best result being a 5th place effort in 1991.

Although John is the nephew of the legendary racer Mario Andretti, he had to work hard at the grassroots level of the sport to advance to the next level.
