On Tuesday 28th June 2022 at 01:00 local time, inmates of the prison in the city of Tuluá staged a protest against jail conditions and set fire to mattresses in an attempt to prevent the authorities from regaining control of the prison. The ensuing blaze led to the deaths of at least 40 prisoners.
Firefighter and ambulances were despatched to the prison as the blaze got out control and engulfed one of the prison blocks and city residents reported see smoke and flames inside the prison.
The authorities do not believe that any prisoners escaped during the disturbance.
