Manchester Corporation Transport No. 3629 (UNB629)

Manchester Corporation Transport (MCT) No. 3629 is a Leyland Atlantean PDR1/1 with Metro Cammell bodywork and a H44/34F seating configuration. It was part of the first batch of Atlanteans delivered to MCT in 1960.

On Street View in July 2019 MCT No. 3629 is seen inside the Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester’s depot on Boyle Street, Cheetham Hill, having been repatriated from Australia in 1992. It is in MCT’s traditional red livery rather than the red and white adopted for the “Mancunian” bodied Leyland Atlantean’s delivered between 1968 and 1972.

The Leyland Atlantean was a double-decker bus chassis built by Leyland Motors at its factory in Lancashire. It was along with the Daimler Fleetline a pioneering design for rear-engined, front-entrance bus chassis which paved the way for the introduction of one-man-operation (OMO) in the UK.

The Leyland Atlantean was hugely successful and became the mainstay of many bus operators in the UK.
