"Old Put" - Israel Putnam

"Old Put" - Israel Putnam

Brooklyn, Connecticut (CT), US
Israel Putnam (January 7, 1718 – May 29, 1790) was a general for the Americans during the Revolutionary War. He is perhaps most known for his unwaivering courage and quote at the Battle of Bunker Hill. "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes" is the quote attributed to Old Put.

Putnam died in 1790 in Brooklyn, CT and was buried off of Canterbury Road. After years of souvenir hunters and passing time, it was decided that Putnam be placed in a sarcophagus. Today Old Put is found at the base of the statue.
