First location of The Nature Company store (founded in the early 1970s) at the corner of Sutter and El Dorado streets in north Berkeley. Specializing in nature-related items (educational toys, books, rocks, telescopes, gems, artwork, CDs, etc) it eventually grew into a chain of over 100 stores in the U.S., U.K. and Canada. Acquired by specialty retail holding company CML group in the 1990s, its stores were eventually converted to Discovery Channel stores or closed by 2001.
