The cross marks the site where the Protestant Oxford Martyrs, Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley were burnt at the stake on October 16, 1555 and later Thomas Cranmer on March 21, 1556.

The three men were arrested after the Catholic Queen Mary I took the throne. They were tried at University Church of St Mary the Virgin and imprisoned at Bocardo Prison.
