This old Courthouse is famous in more ways than one. The original building from 1820 was burned down during the civil war by Union General Wilson. Who was raiding southern counties at the time, destroying property.
The new courthouse again burned down in 1876. Freeman Henry Wells was the prime suspect. Enraged townsfolk cornered him at this very building.
The urban legend that goes with the building states, that Wells was struck by lightning whilst peering out of the top window, at the baying mob below. An imprint or 'lightning print' of Wells face is said to still be visible on the top floor window.
The famous window that the legend surrounds has an arrow pointing to it and is at the top of the thumbnail.
