On Saturday 9th July 2022 Doug PY1II a radio amateur from Brazil reached the summit of Pico da Bandeira and became the first to activate this summit on the amateur radio bands for the Summits on the Air (“SOTA”) group.

He made 26 contacts in total working on the 2 metre VHF and the 40 and 15 metre HF amateur radio bands.

The summit of Pico da Bandeira is 2897 metres (9505 feet) asl. It has a rating of 10 points on the SOTA groups database.
