Pine Tree Flag at Justice Samuel Alito's House

On 22 MAY 2024, as confirmed by photos taken by a few neighbors as well as Google Street View, it was revealed that US Supreme Court Justice had been flying the "Pine Tree Flag" or "An Appeal to Heaven Flag" behind his vacation home in New Jersey, from January 2024, at least through August 2023 when Google Street View images were taken. This revelation came days after it was revealed that an upside down American Flag was hung outside his Virginia home following the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building -- he later said that was his wife's doing. Per the US Flag Code, the US Flag is not to be inverted “except as a signal of dire distress in instance of extreme danger to life or property.”

The Pine Tree Flag, which dates back to the American Revolution, has been used since the 2010s as a religious and political symbol by some conservative, nationalist, and Christian nationalist activists within the United States. In 2021, some Trump supporters carried the flag during the January 6 United States Capitol attack, which is now believed to be the impetus for Justice Alito to have flown the flag at his property.
