Port Struggles to Export Ukrainian Grain – June 2022

Constanta, Romania (RO)
On Friday 24th June 2022 the Associated Press reported that because of the blockade of Ukraine’s seaports the Romanian port of Constanta had become the main conduit for exporting its neighbour’s grain.

The grain terminal at Constanta is Europe’s fasting loading terminal for cereals and has already processed over 1 million tons of Ukraine’s grain. However, the operator Convex has stated that it is struggling to keep up and that to increase throughput it will require concerted EU support and investment.

The appeal for support has not fallen on deaf ears and the leaders of France, Germany and Italy have assured Klaus Iohannis, the Romanian president, that they will strive to prevent the ‘weaponization’ of grain exports.
