The Queen Elizabeth bridge, in central Belfast, was opened by HM Queen Elizabeth, accompanied by HRH Duke of Edinburgh on 4th July, 1966. The bridge crosses the River Lagan in an east/west direction carrying four lanes of traffic and two footways. Traffic flows one way - west to east - and is paired with the Queen's Bridge, to the south, in managing traffic flow.
