The northern extremity of the ridge has historically been associated with Queen Mainamati, who was the mother of the last known Chandra King, Govindachandra.

The mound has only undergone only limited excavation but so far archaeological digs have found parts of a massive defensive wall surrounding other sites which probably served as a citadel and a palace.

It is believed that the monuments on the ridge first appeared in the 7th century AD and that the sites continued to be occupied up to the 12th/13th century.
