Red Cloud (Lakota: Maȟpíya Lúta) (1822 – 12/10/1909) was a feared warrior and respected leader of the Oglala Lakota, a subtribe within the Sioux Nation. Red Cloud waged war against the settlers and the United States army as they encroached on Sioux lands and broke promises. Later in life Red Cloud continued to fight for his people through negotiations while living on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Red Cloud died at the age of 88 and was buried on the reservation in Red Cloud Cemetery.

Red Cloud is attributed with a famous quote in his old age, "They made us many promises, more than I can remember. But they kept but one--They promised to take our land...and they took it."
