The Rinconada Canyon trail follows a volcanic escarpment where many petroglyphs were chiselled into the boulders by the ancestral Pueblo People.

The geology of the canyon was shaped by volcanic activity 200,000 years ago. During the volcanic eruptions a layer of basalt was deposited over the pre-existing sandstone of the Santa Fe Formation. Over time differential weathering of the soft sandstone and the harder basalt has caused large blocks of basalt to break off and roll down the escarpment.

The moderately strenuous trail is 1.1 miles long, a round trip of 2.2 miles and affords the visitor the opportunity to view a variety of petroglyphs, wildlife and shelters.
