Umm el-Jimal is a village located in modern-day Jordan. However, next to the city is a substantial collection of ruins dating back to the Byzantine and early Islamic periods and also some ruins from the Roman Empire.

The Romans gained control of the area in 106 AD under the command of Emperor Trajan and the village quickly became part of the Roman province of Arabia. After the Roman Empire fell and split into the Western and Eastern Roman Empires, the eastern took control of the area. After the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire (also known as the Byzantine Empire), the Umayyad Empire gained control of the area.
