Originally built in the 1400s as a Dominican monestary, the palace was transformed into a hotel in 1896 by a descendant of the monestery's founder, Damiano Rosso. The hotel is currently operated by The Four Seasons luxury hotel group.
Over the years, the hotel has been host to Oscar Wilde, D. H. Lawrence, Umberto di Savoy, William II of Hohenzollern, Richard Wagner, Liz Taylor, Richard Burton, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, Igor Stravinsky, Marlene Dietrich, and many more.
The hotel serves as the filming location for season 2 of the acclaimed HBO series 'White Lotus', to be called 'White Lotus Sicily'.
