Though she was known to her fans by just her first name, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was born in Lake Jackson, Texas. Her mother had Cherokee ancestry and her father was a Mexican-American musician. She was raised as a Jehovah’s witness. The family moved to Corpus Christi in 1982 and formed the band Selena y Los Dinos. She was taken out of school in the eighth grade to focus on her music career.

Though she did not speak Spanish and wanted to sing English-language music, her father pushed her toward the traditional Tejano style of music popularized by Mexicans living in the United States. After releasing several Tejano LPs, she signed with EMI Latin Records. She released four albums with EMI and sold millions of records.

On March 31, 1995, Selena was shot by Yolanda Saldívar in at a motel in Corpus Christi. Saldívar was the manager of Selena’s boutiques and had been embezzling money from the family and Selena’s fan club. The gunshot had severed an artery and Selena was dead on arrival at the Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital.

Chris Pérez joined Los Dinos as a guitarist in 1989 and soon after, he and Selena developed a romantic relationship. Selena’s father did not approve of the relationship and fired Pérez. Pérez and Selena eloped in 1992 and Selena’s father eventually accepted the relationship and allowed Pérez back into the band.
