Schmidt then worked on several political campaigns before joining the George W. Bush administration. He became a senior member of the Bush reelection campaign under Karl Rove. In 2006, he left the White House to become the campaign manager for California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s re-election campaign before being hired to work on the McCain campaign. During his time with McCain, he was instrumental in the selection of Sarah Palin to be McCain’s running mate. The 2012 film Game Change, in which role of Schmidt it played by Woody Harrelson, tells this story.
Schmidt co-founded The Lincoln Project to oppose the re-election of Donald Trump in 2020. Schmidt has since resigned from the project amid sexual harassment accusations against Lincoln Project employees and alleged cover-ups.
