On May 10, 1863, Confederate General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson died in this plantation office during the American Civil War.

On May 2, during the Battle of Chancellorsville, Jackson and his staff returned to their camp at night, when they were mistaken as invading Union soldiers by his own troops. He was shot three times in the arm and hand.

His left arm was amputated, and he was taken 27 miles away to Thomas C. Chandler's plantation to recover on May 4. Unfortunately, doctors did not recognize his symptoms of pneumonia, which took his life days later.

Today, this site is operated by the National Park Service as a shrine to Jackson.
