The Apostle Paul and tomb

The Apostle Paul and tomb

Rome, Italy (IT)
Paul, originally known as Saul of Tarsus was an apostle of Jesus Christ about 30 years after Jesus' resurrection. Prior to becoming a follower of Christ, Saul/Paul was born to a devout Jewish family in Tarsus. The Book of Acts in the Bible indicates Paul was a Roman citizen and received a good education in Jerusalem under the noted rabbi Gamaliel. According to Acts, Saul became a devout Pharisee and persecuted the followers of Christ (Stephen -Acts 7:58) until he was converted on the road to Damascus and renamed Paul.

Paul spent his last days in Rome according to Acts 28 and the book of Romans. The Bible does not mention and it's not clear how Paul died. Some sources (Ignatius and Dionysius of Corinth) state he was martyred by beheading. His remains are believed to be at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. In 2009 a sarcophagus found inscribed with the words "Paul apostle martyr" in Latin were found under the altar.
