Bea Arthur was an actress, comedian, singer, U.S. Marine, and animal rights activist. She was best known for her Emmy Award winning roles roles as the titular character on the 70s comedy show Maude, and as Dorothy Zbornak on The Golden Girls, and her Tony Award winning role of Vera Charles in Mame.

After her death in 2009, Arthur left $300,000 in her will to the Ali Forney Center to be used for the housing of homeless LGBT youth.
