The Ebony Lounge on the rooftop of the Streamline Hotel was the place where a group of stock car racing competitors and enthusiasts gathered on December 14, 1947.
Their discussions were focused on making their sport more professional. They talked about creating a uniform set of rules, providing insurance for the competitors, and guaranteeing the distribution of prize money.
Three more meetings were held at the hotel over the next few months, and the result was the founding of NASCAR on February 21, 1948.
The art deco designed hotel was built in 1941. It boasted a fireproof design and was an air raid shelter during World War II.
