The stone statue of Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe depicts him glazing skyward it is located in the grounds of the observatory he built on the island of Ven, now in Sweden but in Brahe's time part of Denmark.
Brahe is widely considered to be the greatest pre-telescope astronomer and his contributions to astronomy were huge. He was the first to make corrections for atmospheric refraction and to observe the orbits of the moon and planets. He also changed observational practice, stressing the importance of accuracy and revolutionise astronomical instrumentation.
The observatory, Uranienborg, was named after Urania, the muse of astronomy.
