It is not known precisely when the Urquhart Castle was built, but records show the existence of a castle on this site from the early 1200s. The building was blown up in 1692 to prevent it becoming a Jacobite stronghold. Today, the castle is owned by the National Trust for Scotland, and run by Historic Scotland. It is Historic Scotland's 3rd busiest site, possibly because of tourists trying to catch a glimpse of Loch Ness Monster.
