In 1876, the 23 year old Vincent Van Gogh came to teach at Holme Court House, a private school run by Reverend Slade-Jones, a non-conformist minister. The school had previously been in Ramsgate which he had enjoyed, teaching the bible. When the school moved, Van Gogh was so poor that he had to walk to Isleworth from Ramsgate which took him some three days. At christmas that year, the very religious Van Gogh went home and never returned to England.
