Build around 1664 for the Dukes of Augustenborg and is one of the most impressive castles in Denmark.
Sept. 11. to 29. 1844 Hans Christian Andersen visited the Duke of Augustenborg. Here he also wrote some of his stories and plays.
He was often sitting on a bench under a Talia tree, this tree and bench still exist and is a popular spot to sit and look over Augustenborg Fjord.
May 22. 1815 Caroline Amalie of Augustenborg married King Christian VIII and became Queen of Denmark. The wessing was held in the church of the castle.
Today the castle is a mental hospital and the park a popular concert venue. Here stars as Mark Knopfler, Roger Waters, Gary Moore and Luciano Pavarotti (one of his last) have given concert here.
