When the earthquake of 1906 leveled San Francisco, a stone and marble portico -- once part of a mansion -- was the most famous thing left standing on Nob Hill. And it still stands today, so we figure that merits designation as a proven safe spot to be standing for the next Big One.

The portico was moved to Golden Gate Park and renamed "Portals of the Past."
