Description: Founded in the 11th century. The largest and oldest known Tibetan Buddhist gompa (a fortified place of learning and worship) in Ladakh. Criminals could once claim sanctuary in the surrounding area. About halfway between Kargil and Leh near the India-Pakistan Line of Control.
