The observatory began in 1927, following its first three years based at the Hotel Canberra. It manufactured optics during World War II, and has continued to build and operate Australia’s premier astronomical facilities since then.
Currently, the observatory is promoting Australian involvement in next generation, extremely large telescopes with diameters of 30-100 metres.
Recently experienced a bad fire.
