St. Servaas (Servatius) is the patron saint of Maastricht. He died there in 384 AD, and his tomb survives in the crypt under St. Servaas Cathedral. The church also has a treasury with numerous artifacts dating from the 4th - 8th centuries. Some of these artifacts belonged to St. Servaas himself.

The present St. Servaas Cathedral was built mostly in the 13th century.
