St. Joseph Co-Cathedral

St. Joseph Co-Cathedral (StreetView)
The oldest parish in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, St. Joseph was created as a mission of Assumption in 1817. By 1819 a church was completed and pews were auctioned off to parishioners. Through the efforts of Father Charles Menard, a brick structure at St. Joseph's Church was erected in 1849 to replace the earlier structure. It was destroyed by fire in 1916, and the present structure was dedicated in 1923. The new church, a magnificent building in the Renaissance style of architecture, was obviously intended from the beginning to one day serve as a cathedral.
