Benedict Arnold (January 1741 – June 14, 1801) was a general during the American Revolutionary War. He originally fought as an American, but switched to the British when he became disillusioned with the military and government. Arnold was close to handing over the important American fort at West Point, NY, but the plot was exposed when his British contact, Major John André was captured. Arnold fled to safety in Virginia and fought for the British against his former comrads. He died of dropsy brought on by gout in London. He was burried in the crypt at St Mary's Church, Battersea.
