I was through there a few weeks ago on my way to do the Death Valley Century bicycle race. The salt pan there has thousands of little mylar reflectors to scre the birds way from the salt pan. a local said the birds get wet and the salt crusts on them and then they have to be rescued so they try to scare them away with the reflective mylar streamers.

The 'Trona Bump' is a popular bicycle decent just to the east of town and beyond it is one of the few places you can ride a decent of more than a vertical mile in less than 13 horizontal miles, Towne Mountain Pass. Whee!
