This is the route taken by Sir John Franklin's expedition through the arctic to find the Northwest Passage from Europe to Asia. The red line connects various key locations in order, but isn't reflective of the sailing route. Franklin's expedition left with 134 men and two ships, the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. After two years at sea, they were trapped in the ice. Eventually, all men perished. The remains of the boats were finally found in 2014 (HMS Erebus) and 2016 (HMS Terror). The story is fictionalized in Dan Simmon's "The Terror" (2007), and adapted for television on AMC TV in 2018.
