The New Zealand Herald article on Saturday 11th June 2022 noted that in May 2022 the bodies of 40 little blue penguins had been found not far away on Tokerau. The investigation on the earlier incident by the Ministry for Primary Industries found that the penguins had shown signs of hypothermia and starvation caused by a lack of blubber to keep them warm when in the water.
