On Friday 10th June 2022 the bodies of over 100 little blue penguins were found at Cable Bay in Norland.

Local residents are reported to have noticed a bad smell on Wednesday 8th June, but the birds were not discovered until Friday 10th June off a Department of Conservation vehicle track on Powell Road.

The New Zealand Herald article on Saturday 11th June 2022 noted that in May 2022 the bodies of 40 little blue penguins had been found not far away on Tokerau. The investigation on the earlier incident by the Ministry for Primary Industries found that the penguins had shown signs of hypothermia and starvation caused by a lack of blubber to keep them warm when in the water.
