If you look closely at the thumbnail, or better, zoom in on Google Earth, you'll see that a few of those 727s are missing an engine.
Due to the lengthy embargo, parts for planes were not easy to get in Libya.
To this day, these planes are scavenged. I was at this site a few weeks ago, and watched them make a frankenstein 727 and test it right where that thumbnail is, throwing up huge clouds of dust as the engines raced....we had to wait for it to settle down before we could get on with the helicopter (which is staged from the hanger just to the north of the thumbnail).
