February 1992 brought what was described by Car & Driver as one of the best-handling cars of the 1990s, the E36 BMW M3. Most of the 71,242 built were produced at the Regensburg, Bavaria factory in Germany, and came standard with I6 engines, in which USA-bound units, first brought over there in 1995, produced 240 hp. E36 M3s continued to be produced until December 1997 for the sedan, late 1998 for the sedan, and the end of 1999 for the convertible.
