Peel as the main port in the west of the Isle of Man has long maritime history and many boys from the town would have gone to sea as fishermen and sailors on commercial vessels bring goods to the island. A knowledge of mathematics and of navigation, would have been a been very important skill for those who sort to follow a life at sea. It is strange therefore that by 1836 the school was in decline and the building in bad state of repair forcing its closure. However, in 1848 the school was reopened and did not finally close until 1892.

In recent years the building has become home of The Grace Baptist Church.
