The Hyundai Tiburon, a front-engined, FWD sport compact was released in 1996 for the 1997 model year to replace the Scoupe. Its name derives from the Spanish word for "shark", "tiburón". Base models at first shared the same 1.8 liter 130 hp I4 engine as the Elantra, while FX models had a 2-liter DOHC I4 with 10 more horsepower. In 1998, the base model would have the 2-liter engine as well since they no longer had the Elantra's I4.
