The lighthouse on Ilha da Queimada Grande (nicknamed Snake Island) was built in 1909. The last lighthouse keeper was probably the victim of a snake bite in the 1920s. The island is ruled by a single species of snake - golden lancehead (Bothrops insularis), estimated at one to five individuals per square meter. Today, the lighthouse operates in automatic mode, it is visited only once a year. Entry to the island is strictly forbidden, snake venom can kill a person in one hour.
