This mural of Our Lady of Guadalupe (#18 in The Murals of Conejos County Driving Tour) is located in the heart of Guadalupe, one of the first settlements of the region. According to lore, the town was founded when a traveler's mule, carrying an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, refused to move from the spot. Taking it as a sign, the frustrated traveler vowed to build a church on the spot. The satisfied mule then moved on. The church and town were founded in 1851 and named Guadalupe after the saint.
