St Maxentius’ Church is the only church in England dedicated to the French Saint Maxentius. The other oddity about the church is the presence in the churchyard of a tower from an earlier church which closer to the main road which passes the church.

Saint Maxentius is also known as Saint Maxence and Saint Maixent. He was born in the French commune of Agde east of Bezier and southwest of the city of Montpellier in c445 AD and was named Adjutor. He received his religious instruction from Saint Severus and became a monk in Saint Severus’ abbey. On entering the monastery in Poitou, he took the name Maxentius and around 500 AD he succeeded Abbot Agapitus as Abbot.

Maxentius is credited with several miracles during his lifetime, but details are sketchy. Most notable was the ending of drought in the area of the Monastery after a period of absence.
