A church on this site was in existence during the Doomsday survey in 1086. During the 14th and 15th centuries rebuilding and alterations took place. In 1692 there was an earthquake that affected the tower resulting in it eventually being declared unsafe and in 1758 it was demolished. The tower was rebuilt and other works took place in the 18th and 19th centuries.
