While being the last generation of the Celica, it was the first Toyota with a VVTL-i engine, a variant of the VVT-i engine that acts like said engine but can also control lift in a similar way Honda's VTEC engine does, along with valve timing. Each camshaft has two lobes for lower and higher RPMs for each cylinder. In this case, the Celica has a 2ZZ-GE engine, the same engine found in the Corolla and Matrix XRS, Pontiac Vibe GT, and the Lotus Elise and Exige.
